The game experience is inspired by the music video game Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Like the original, as music plays, a sequence of dance steps is displayed on screen, and players must follow along by stepping on pressure-sensitive pads. Unlike the original, there are computer-controlled propane flame effects in various places around the DDI arena. When players are doing well, they are rewarded by jets of fire that blast up into the air, and when they do poorly, flamethrowers fire directly at their faces.
Participants are not harmed since they wear a full aluminized fire proximity suit with forced-air respirators. Numerous other safeguards are built into the system to ensure the players are not subject to direct flame exposure or inhalation of superheated air.
